Donald Trump pulls off greatest con job of all time

It’s been a week and the reality is still not sinking in. It just downright refuses to. It’s like my brain has shut down from a fatal system error because it’s unable to parse that a crass, insecure, loudmouthed, childish, bigoted, sexist, insufferable racist Internet troll has been elected as the new leader of the Free World.

Donald J. Trump. The 45th President of the United States of America.

Nope.

Fatal error.

How could this have happened, America? You did so well electing Barack Obama twice, and you had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to follow it up with a slam dunk by putting the first female president in the Oval Office. You had the opportunity to make history yet again. But instead you took several steps backwards and decided to put in charge an orange pot-bellied con man who has bankrupted multiple companies and swindled people of their hard-earned earnings.

You had one job, America! One job! And you bungled it unfathomably!

Some people say, ‘Oh, he just got elected. Give him a chance to prove himself. Maybe he will make a difference in people’s lives.’ I’m sorry but I just cannot buy into that. This is a 70-year-old man who had spent his entire adult life enriching himself on the misfortune of others, discriminating against people because of the color of their skin, treating people like disposable objects, making unwanted sexual advances towards women, and generally being a mean-spirited asshole whose sole motivations are self-promotion, pampering his overinflated ego and making more money for himself and himself alone. You think he ran for President out of the kindness of his heart and a genuine desire to change the lives of all Americans for the better? I don’t think so.

Like Marco Rubio said during the Republican primaries, Trump is a con man, and, like a savvy con man that he is, he deviously focused on a large segment of the American population that wasn’t thrilled with having a black President for the past 8 years. He sold himself to these Americans as someone who understood and felt their pain. Posturing as a modern day revolutionary with a “movement,” Trump fanned the flames of anger, resentment and racism among these gullible people and presented himself as their savior, knowing full well he couldn’t care less about anyone else but himself and those with whom he has vested interests.

I alone can fix it.

And they all fell for it. Hook, line and sinker.

It is, without a doubt, the greatest con job of all time.

Now that he’s in, Trump will undoubtedly surround himself with yes men who will enable him and not question his decisions, and with both chambers of Congress in full Republican control, nothing will stop him from enacting policies that will only benefit his bottom line. The rich will become richer, the poor even more destitute. Income inequality will soar to enormous heights. Racial tensions will get inflamed further. The American economy will likely collapse and trigger a recession even worse than the one left by George W. Bush. The whole country will become exposed to even greater terrorist risks.

And all because millions of Americans fell for a narcissistic con man with a giant ego.
