The POPGORGE Skinny:
Matthias Schweighöfer scene-stealing and endearing performance as Ludwig Dieter in "Army Of The Dead" must have tested really well with focus audiences for Netflix to green-light this prequel. On paper, it sounds awesome, but the execution just left a wee bit to be desired. It is a textbook heist movie that sadly lacks the thrills and excitement that normally come with the territory. There were glimmers of potential here and there that did not come to fruition. Schweighöfer's charm unfortunately wasn't enough to carry the entire movie, and there is a general feeling that as an origin movie for Dieter, this simply did not deliver all that it could have. If this is supposed to be the first of several "Army" sequels/prequels, then Netflix got off to a rocky start.
